Norway is a large producer of renewable energy because
of hydropower. Over 99% of the electricity production in
Total PrimaryEnergy Supply, Norway
mainland Norway is from hydropower plants. The total
Bio-mass
production of electricity from hydropower plants
amounted to 135.3 TWh in 2007. There is also a large
hydro
potential in wind power, offshore wind power and wave
power, as well as production of bio-energy from wood.
Norway has limited resources in solar energy, but is one
of the world's largest producers of solar grade silicon and silicon solar cells.
In August 2016 construction of the 1 GW Fosen Vind
project began. Increased production of power from wind
turbines will allow Norway to curtail its domestic consumption of hydroelectricity, which due to being
dispatchable, is a valuable asset in the international power market. To further curtail its consumption of
hydroelectricity, Norway imports electricity when excess wind production in Denmark and the Netherlands drivesprices down there.
As of April 2016, the Norwegian fleet of plug-in electric vehicles consist of about 81,500 all-electric passengerand light-duty vehicles, almost 17,100 plug-in hybrids, and over 2,000 all-electric commercial vans. The total stock includes almost 12,000 used imported electric cars.

Questions:
A) What are the desirable factors that have enabled Norway to produce 99% of electricity from hydropower
plants?
B) Name the source of bio energy mentioned in the passage.
C) By analyzing the graph given, explain how Norway is becoming greener every year.
D) Why has Norway shown interest in electric vehicles?

Answers are as below from the passage about renewable energy in Norway.

A. Norway has limited resources for producing energy from solar power as we know the sun is available for 6 months in a year only. Due to its natural advantage of topography, using hydro-power for producing electricity is much desirable option.

B. Norway produces bio energy from wood.

C. As Norway has ample of electricity, they started using electric vehicle which does not pollute environment. The increases of using electric vehicles are making Norway greener every year.

D. Producing Electricity is something Norway excelled in. They even import electricity to other countries. So using electric vehicle is feasible there.
