With a free printing press everybody could have equal access to knowledge. This was not universally accepted when print first came into being specially by the roman catholic church and the clergy. They feared that if everyone gained knowledge they would start questioning the legitimacy of the church and the king. They would demand reasons for various ill practices of the church like the creation of feudal system, tax system, extraction of feudal dues. Therefore these institutions did not welcome the printed book and had their doubts and fears towards it.
