not marbles not the gilded monuments why is war called wasteful?

The poet has caled the war wasteful coz , it only causes destruction to statues  and other buliding . they have caused havoc with man's proud building and other monuments . later the poet says that  , inspite of the wars his memory of his friend recorded in his verses  , will remain forever  and thw wars cannot destroy it .
