I would try to be as simple as possible here.
Most of us study the same syllabus, some times the same notes, many a times from same refference. Still some answers are evaluated better and some are given average score. What is the reason behind this?
All we reproduce in the exam is our knowledge of the subject. Should not it be given equal grading?
Here comes the moot point. Exams are for testing our understanding of the subject and merely not the knowledge.
When we understand, we internalise the subject. Hence, our answers show that we have understood it step- by- step, in a logical sequence. If you can impress upon the examiner that you have developed understanding, your score would be notches above.
How to write answers with understanding? First of all, if you want to write such answers, stop depending on ready made stuff. Create your own notes. In the notes, give emphasis on connections, from topic to subtopic, and so on. Understand the entire picture, and how each cog fits in. Use mental maps for the purpose.
Then approach question. Your understanding of the issue and relevant data is your starting point. Arrange your info and your analysis in brief sentences but flowing language. Use the adage" No new thoughts in the same para, and separate para for new thought", wherever in doubt. Use bullet points where you need to be precise. No harm in using block diagrams, floww charts or schematic diagrams. This effort would underline your internalisation of information.
Make sure that you write summary or conclusion to end the answer.
Hope this helps.
