(i) Reena is 6 years older than her brother Ajay. If the sum lf their ages is 28 years, what are their present ages?

(ii) Deepak is twice as old as his brother Vikas. If the difference of their ages be 11 years, find their present ages.

(iii) Mrs Goel is 27 years older than her daughter Rekha. After 8 years she will be twice as old as Rekha. Find their present ages. ​

(i) let age of Ajay = x

age of Reena = x + 6

Sum of their ages = x + x + 6 = 28 = 2x + 6 = 28

2x = 28 - 6 = 22

x = 22/2 = 11

Age of Ajay = 11 years

age of Reena = 11 + 6 = 17 years

(ii) Let age of Vikas = x

age of Deepak = 2x

difference of their ages = 2x - x = 11

or x = 11 years

age of deepak = 2x = 2 × 11 = 22 years

(iii) Let age of Rekha = x

age of Mrs. Goel = 27 + x

After 8 years,

age of Rekha = x + 8

so, age of Mrs. Goel = 2(x + 8) = 2x + 16

since, diff. in their ages will be constant,

(27 + x) - x = (2x + 16) - (x + 8)

27 = x + 8

x = 27 - 8 = 21 years

age of mrs. goel = 27 + 21 = 48 years

(iv) Let age of son = x

age of man = 4x

After 16 years,

age of son = 16 + x

age of man = 2(16 + x) = 32 + 2x

Diff. in their ages will be constant,

so, (32 + 2x) - (16 + x) = 4x - x

16 + x = 3x

16 = 2x

x = 16/2 = 8 years

age of man = 4x = 4 × 8 = 32 years

(v) Let age of son = x

age of man = 3x

5 years ago,

age of son = x - 5

age of man = 4 (x - 5) = 4x - 20

Diff. in their ages will be constant,

so, (4x - 20) - (x - 5) = 3x - x

3x - 15 = 2x

3x - 2x = 15

x = 15 years

so, age of man = 3x = 3 × 15 = 45 years
