Deep Water:

William Douglas with a great passion for water wants to learn swimming.

He had a childhood fear of water because of a particular incident. At the age of 3 or 4, when he was surfing on a beach in California, he was knocked by a huge wave. This set a fear for water within the boy.

After a few years when he longed to swim in the “Yakima River”, his mother did not support him saying that the river was dangerous and treacherous.

The YMCA pool was considered to be the safest place for swimming by William Douglas because it was only six feet deep and was tiled at the bottom. He started swimming in the YMCA pool by copying other boys.

One day, he was pushed into the deep end of the pool by one of the bigger boys while he was waiting for the other boys to come.

This time, however, Douglas tried thrice to come up. At the third attempt, however, he almost lost consciousness and considered himself dead. Douglas describes death to be peaceful. He was pulled out by someone and provided first aid.

After this incident, Douglas avoided water and water sports because the fear for water had set deep inside him.

When he grew up, however, his passion of water lured him again to water and water sports. This time around, he hired a trainer and learnt swimming. Douglas was successful at learning swimming and also overcoming the fear for water.  Once he had got rid of his fear, he began to swim in different rivers and lakes.
