After Independence or the Partition of India, our legal framemakers were very cautious of spreading the use of Hindi, the most spoken language in India. English was to be discontinued for all purposes by 1965 but due to protests from Non-Hindi speaking states such as states of South India (Tamil Nadu) the decision was rolled back. Even though Hindi was publicised everywhere, use of English could be continued. This saved our country from division on the basis of linguistic lines unlike the case of Sri Lanka.

it is identified that hindi is national language. This was due to Hindi being spoken by 40% of the Indian population while the rest spoke the other 21 languages recognized as Scheduled languages by the Constitution of India.
