Indian Air Force is engaged in various civil aid relief measures. The Transport & Helicopter fleets of Indian Air Force have played a pivotal role in assistance to Central & State Governments during natural calamities and disasters.

In calamity situations, the first casualty will be the communication lines. Hence to have a fair idea of the extent of the calamity, and also to reach immediate succour to the impacted population, the IAF conducts an aerial survey. In areas closer to the Sea ,where Navy is present in significant strength,Naval Aircraft may also do this survey. The task is undertaken at the request of the DIstrict Adminiostration/DIstrict Disaster Management Authority, or the State Disaster Management Authority. The first Call ordinarily will go tothe nearest Army Camp, and they would suggest the involvement of Air Force/Navy/COPast GUard ,as the case may be. But the roles may be reversed or modified as per location.
