Note on the Author
Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897) was a French short story writer
and novelist. Daudet wrote his first novel at the age of 14. Unable
to finish his schooling after his parents lost all their money,
he took a position in a duke's household. He later joined the
army but fled the terrors of the Paris commune of 1871. His
health was long undermined by poverty
that cost him his life. His many works
include the story collection Monday
Tales, the play L'Arlesienne the novels
- The Nabob and Sappho and several
volumes of memoirs.
"The Ensign' is a moving short story set
against the Franco-Prussian war
depicting the patriotism of sergeant
Hornus. Fighting against the Prussian
army sergeant Hornus chooses to die
rather than give up his beloved flag.
