Germany was divided in many states. In 1848, the German confederation and Prussia tried organising themselves into a German state. Prussia took on the leadership. Its chief minister Otto Von Bismarck, was the architect of this process carried out with the help of the Prussian army and bureaucracy.

German Unification was the result of hardwork of people and many leaders like Otto Von Bismarck. The first attempt to unify Germany was made by middle class elites in 1848. But it was crushed and then Prussia under the Bismarck took the leadership for German Unification. By diplomatic alliances and tactics he defeated France, Austria and Denmark and then the process of unification was completed. He was made the Chancellor of the North Confederation for his work. Kaiser William I was proclaimed as the King of United Germany in January 1871.
