Answer:

Jerome Bruner, a cognitive psychologist, created a theory of development based upon the idea that the goal of education should be intellectual development. In this theory, he identified three modes of representation. Enactive is the stage that involves direct manipulation of objects without an internal representation.

Notes on jerome bruner cognitive development theory

  • Bruner began exploring the mental experiences of learners. This led him to conclude that children learn concepts and procedures for problem-solving but more importantly they “invent” these as well. In this way children are actively creating their own knowledge.
  • There are three levels of cognitive representation, according to Jerome Bruner. Enactive, or the demonstration of knowledge by deeds. Iconic, which is a way to visually summarise pictures. Using language and other symbols to depict experiences is known as symbolic representation.
  • According to Bruner, "excellent teachers will create lessons that support pupils in learning how various pieces of information relate to one another. A teacher must achieve this by providing students with the information they require without organising it for them (Saul McLeod).
  • As a component of social constructivism, Bruner's idea of scaffolding first appeared around 1976. It was heavily influenced by the work of Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky. According to Vygotsky, we learn best in a social setting where we can engage with others to create meaning.
  • Parents and teachers can benefit from Bruner's scaffolding theory. According to Bruner's scaffolding hypothesis, in order for children to develop into independent learners as they get older, they require support and involvement from their teachers and parents.
