Microbes in beverages :-

1. Saccharomyces cerevisae, commonly known as the brewer's yeast, is used in fermentation to produce alcohol.

Microbes in antibiotics :-

2. Penicillium notatum was discovered accidentally by Alexander Fleming while working on Staphylococcus bacteria. Later, Ernest Chain and Howard Florey established it's full potential. It was used as an antibiotic to treat American solidiers during World War II. Fleming, Chain and Florey were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1945, for this discovery.

Microbes as chemicals :-

3. Streptokinase : It is used as a ‘clot buster’ for removing clots from the blood vessels of the patients who have undergone myocardial infarction leading to heart attack.

Microbes as bioactive molecules :-

4. Cyclosporin A : It is used as an immunosuppressive agent in organ-transplant patients.
