Answer:

by important you mean actively taking roles in our everyday life, I’d say religion. Religion is responsible (particularly in the Judeo-Christian-Islamic world) for influencing almost every aspect of our everyday existence. From the way we greet each other to how we bury the dead to how we marry to how we celebrate even secularized holidays, religion has a hand in countless traditions, customs, and rites of passage.

Even those who are not religious tend to celebrate Christmas and the like which have pagan origins, we still do things that serve no practical purpose such as saying bless you after someone sneezes. Not to mention, particularly in Europe and the Near East as well as North Africa, sometimes even to this day, religious or quasi-religious organizations such as churches or religious militias even have been responsible for the opening of secular institutions like hospitals, universities, and the like.

Even in societies that are secular like England or even seemingly anti religious like France or the Baltic states, you can still very clearly see religion play an influencing cultural roles in most aspects of society.

Science, on the other hand, is more so the concern of people involved in the field. Your everyday person who is not in a scientific field probably has little invested interest in it, even though they might often harbor a great admiration for it from afar. For example, I appreciate all that science has done but I don’t have a great deal of personal interest in learning about it as I don’t find it interesting.

Science is a discipline to be learned, tested, and analyzed, it must be approached with the active idea of engaging in it. Organized religion is firstly an institution, man-made and codified, and secondly it is an experiential aspect of the human life. If science isn’t pursued by someone, it is unlikely to play a part in their life. Religion, whether someone cares for it or not, will constantly appear in someone’s interactions with the greater society.

This answer applies mainly to Europe, the Near East, and North Africa. My knowledge of the importance of religion or science in the everyday life of other civilizations and regions is too limited to try and answer.

So the reason I say religion is of greater importance to humanity is because it builds the framework or is involved in the framework of our cultures, institutions, way of life, and customs. So it plays a part in almost everything we do. Science is important in the sense that it pushes us forward by way of inventions, technological breakthroughs, medicinal advancements, and so on. But I can’t see it being important on a personal or intimate level with the majority of people, even if they appreciate it, in the same way something like religion, nationalism, or family would be.
