My grandmother's village was a mind blowing place. I accompanied my grandmother quite a number of times. It is a historic village of South Bengal and had been ruled by a benevolent Zamindar.
The name of the village is Amlajora. The villagers and my grandmother spoke of many personalities of yester years and the stories associated with them. The person who caught my attention most was Indubala Devi, the Zamindar's wife.
She was a lady of elegance and grace. Contrary to girls not studying those days she was highly qualified and a distinguished polyglot. But her erudition did not make her conceited. She was humble, sympathetic, courageous, rational and amiable in nature.
Very soft spoken yet very dynamic, her wealth did not make her boastful. She was kind, impartial, considerate, unassuming and generous. She cared for the poor in the Zamindari and was highly compassionate towards them. She was affectionate and highly concerned about their well being.
Among all the personalities I have heard of I like her the most.
