in the nucleus of a radioactive element, where there is an excess of neutrons, a neutron changes into a proton by emitting an electron ( yes! u heard that right. a neutron is a compressed hydrogen atom). now the electron cannot remain in the nucleus, so it is thrown out with a great speed. and since the neutron has changed into a proton ( both with approx. same mass) there is no change in the atomic mass of the element.

hope this helps...

tarun0001: anyway thnx
tarun0001: nice explanation
adit22: thank u!
adit22: I don't know exactly abt beta decay bcoz I m in class 10th so....
tarun0001: its approx right not 100%
tarun0001: if u r in 10th class its a gd 1 ans
adit22: That's what we have been taught( not even that much I found out all that all by myself so...)
adit22: thank u! again
tarun0001: ooooo gd
adit22: thank uh!
