Solution:
Let the numbers be 100x and 100y
Now, we know that the sum of two numbers is 1230, so
- 100x + 100y = 1230 ....①
Now, we know that the 20% of one number is equal to 50% of other.
- 20% of 100x = 50% of 100y
- 20/100 × 100x = 50/100 × 100y
- 2/10 × 100x = 5/10 × 100y
- 2 × 10x = 5 × 10y
- 20x = 50y
Now, multiply both the sides by 5
- 20x × 5 = 50y × 5
- 100x = 250y ....②
Substitute the values of eq ② in eq ① , we have
- 250y + 100y = 1230
- 350y = 1230
- y = 1230/350
- y = 3.514
We have consider the other number as 100y
- 100y = 3.514 × 100
- 100y = 351.4
Now, take eq ① for finding the value of 100x
- 100x + 100y = 1230
- 100x = 1230 - 100y
Substitute the value of 100 y in
- 100x = 1230 - 351.4
- 100x = 878.6
∴ The first number = 878.6
And the other number = 351.4
Verify:
As it is given the sum of two numbers is 1230, so
- 878.6 + 351.4 = 1230
Also, 20% of one number is equal to 50% of other.
- 20% of 878.6
- 20/100 × 878.6
- 2/10 × 878.6
- 175.7
- 50% of 351.4
