The carbon atoms present in the ‘R’ functional group of the simplest amino acid is 0.

  • In all the amino acids NH2, COOH and H are present.
  • R is the alkyl group different in all the amino acids.
  • The R group can be CH3, -CH2COOH and CH2NH2 etc.
  • Glycine is the simplest amino acid.
  • In the simplest amino acid glycine, R is a hydrogen atom.
  • Glycine amino acid is the only amino acid which is achiral because it does not have all the 4 groups different as hydrogen is 2 times.
