possible dichloro derivatives for propane are:

1. 1, 2 di chloro propane

2. 1, 3 dichloro propane

3. 1,1 dicloro propane

4. 2,2 dichloro propane

So, number of dichloro derivates = X = 4

The chiral molecule is 1, 2 dichloro propane

so, no. of chiral molecules = Y = 1

So, X - Y = 4 - 1 = 3
