understanding terms  Triple fusion - the fusion of male gamete(n) and center polar nuclei(2n) to form the primary endosperm nucleus is termed as triple fusion(ploidy=3n or triploid).  Double fertilization- two types of fusion takes place in the embryo sac, namely syngamy(male gamete + female gamete) and triple fusion (male gamete + 2 polar nuclei) this phenomenon which is exclusive for the flowering plant is termed as double fertilization.  1)  The number of gametes that take place in the triple fusion is 1 (only male gamete) 2) The number of gametes that take place in the double fusion is 3 (2 male gametes       and 1 female gamete)  To conclude 1 gamete in triple fusion and 3 gametes in double fertilization.

The number of gametes that participates in triple fusion and double fertilisation are 3 and 5 respectively.

  • Triple fusion and double fertilisation are key features of angiosperms.
  • Triple fusion is a fusion of male gamete with two polar nuclei.
  • In double fertilisation, one of the male gametes fertilises the egg while the other male gamete binds with two polar nuclei. here occur two types of fertilisation that is why called double fertilisation.
  • Fusion of male gamete with female gamete is known as syngamy.
  • Triple fusion results in endosperm formation while syngamy forms a zygote and embryo.
  • The endosperm is used as reserved food material.
  • The ploidy of the zygote is 2n while the ploidy of the endosperm is 3n. where n is the number of chromosomal sets.
