There are three luxury genes in lac operon- Lac Z, Lac Yand Lac A.
- Luxury genes are also referred to as non-constitutive genes which do not always get expressed in a cell.
- These genes are regulated with the help of inducers or repressors according to the need of the cell.
They can be of two types- inducible and repressible.
In case of lac operon
- The expression of the structural genes is turned off with the help of the lac repressor ( produced constitutively) until some inducer ( lactose) is added.
- In presence of the inducer, it binds to the repressor, thereby inactivating it. This leads to the production of the structural genes-
lacZ- beta-galactosidase
LacY- permease
LacA- galactoside acetyltransferase
