Number of Protons and Electron in an atom are same. Then why is it wrong to say that the atomic number of an element is equal to the number of electrons present?

since, when we say the no of "electrons", after any two atoms form a bond, the no of electrons get either added/ lost so resulting to the alterations of the no of electrons. therefore it is said to be no of protons

The number of protons is not always equal to the number of protons. Electrons can be gained or lost. The mass of electrons is so negligibly low that they don't have much effect, but the element remains the same.
Therefore, due to this unbalance in the number of electrons in the ion, they are not considered to show the atomic number.
