It's a pretty important chapter
Learn the equation to find hybridisation of species
I use the equation
Hybridisation number = S + ½(V-E+A-C)
where, S is the number of surrounding atoms
V is the number of electrons in the valence shell of the central atom
E is the valency of all the surrounding atoms together
A is the anionic charge on the species
C is the cationic charge on the species
For eg, In PCl5
Central atom is P and Cl is the surrounding atom
Hence S = 5
V = 5
E = 1×5 = 5
A = 0
C = 0
Hence hybridisation number = 5+½(5-5+0-0)
= 5+0 = 5
Therefore the hybridisation will be sp³d (5 Orbitals)
and the shape will be trigonal bipyramid
Also try to study the postulates of all the theories like MOT, VBT etc
