There are 5 unshared (with one extra single unshared electron) electron pairs present in NO2.

  • We can denote the chemical formula of the NO2 as O-N=O.
  • From the above mentioned elaboration, we came to know that in NO2,the central atom is nitrogen and there are two oxygen atoms in either side of the nitrogen atom.
  • The right oxygen is bonded with the nitrogen by a double bond and the left oxygen is bonded with the nitrogen by a single bond.
  • Now, there are a total of 17 valence electrons in the whole chemical structure of the NO2.
  • Consumed electrons = ( 2 electrons × 1 single bond + 4 electrons × 1 double bond) = 6 electrons
  • So,the unshared electrons = 17-6 = 11 = 5 pairs + 1 electron.
