Given: orbit in which electron is revolving, n = 4

To Find: Number of waves, N

Solution:

To calculate N, the formula used:

  • N = 2πr / λ                        ⇒ 1

        here, r is the radius of the orbit

        N is the number of waves

         λ is the wavelength

         2πr is the circumference of the orbit

Also, λ = plank's constant(h) / momentum (p)

As, p = mv

So, λ= h / mv

Put the value of λ in equation 1:

N =  2πr / (h / mv)

   = 2πr x mv / h

   = 2π x mvr / h                ⇒2

And, as per Bohr quantization :

nh / 2π = mvr

here, n = 4

∴ 4h /2π = mvr

mvr = 4h/2π

On putting the value of mvr in equations 2:

N = (2π/ h) x (4h/2π)

   = 4h / h

   = 4

N = 4

Hence the number of waves in the 4th orbit is 4.
