Explanation:

Given The monthly expenses in a boarding house are partly fixed and partly a multiple of the  number of boarders. It is Rs. 78660 and Rs 94884 when the numbers of borders are 62 and 75  respectively. What is the monthly expense (in Rs) when the number of borders is 80?

  • We have monthly expenses = fixed cost + variable cost
  • Let the fixed cost be a and variable cost be v
  • So a + 62 v = 78660
  •     a + 75 v = 94884
  •     Subtracting both the equations we get
  •        13 v = 16224
  •       Or v = 16224 / 13
  •       Or v = 1248
  • Now a + 62 v = 78660
  •        a + 62 x 1248 = 78660
  •         a + 77376 = 78660
  •         a = 78660 – 77376
  •     Or a = 1284
  • Therefore the monthly expense when the number of borders are 80 will be 1284 + 1248 x 80                                                                                                                          = 1284 + 99840                                                                                                                         = 101124
