Numerical problems
1.
Which will exert more pressure, a 110 kg mass on 5 m² area or 50 kg mass on 4 mm2 area? Do calculations to
find the answer.
2.
For the given block, which of its surface will exert minimum pressure?
If its weight is 6 N, calculate the pressure in such a case.
h = 6 cm
w=6 cm
The elephant weighs 20,000 N and stands on one foot of area
1000 cm2. How much pressure would it exert on the ground?
1 = 8 cm
Answers
Answer:
1) The weight are force only which acts on the surface area
Hence the force acting on 10m^2 is 100 N
and that on 4m^2 is 50 N
F1 = 100 N
A1 = 10m^2
F2 = 50N
A2 = 4m^2
Pressure = Force/Area P2=F2/A2
P1 = F1/A1 P2=50/4
= 110/10 P2=12.5Pascal
=11 Pascal
P1 = 11 Pa P2=12.5PASCAL
HenceP2>P1
2) As we know that the expression for pressure is
Pressure = Force / Area
Thus, we can say that maximum the area minimum will be the pressure exerted by the table. So in order to find the minimum pressure calculate the maximum area by using different combination as follows
A1 = Width x length = 6cm x 8 cm = 48cm^2
A2 = Width x height = 6cm x 6 cm = 36 cm^2
A3 = length x height = 6cm x 8 cm = 48cm^2
As A1 and A3 are same so the both will exert same pressure.
A2 = 0.06m X 0.08m = 0.0048m^2
Now calculate the pressure
Pressure = Force / Area = 6 N / 0.0048m^2
Pressure = 1250 N/m^2
3) 1000cm²=0.1m²
Here his weight is the thrust it is exerting on the ground.
thus ,
pressure = thrust/area
= 20000/0.1
= 200000 Pa
