Poem Appreciation.
1) Title : O Captain! My Captain!
2) Poet : Walt Whitman
3) Theme/Central Idea : The poem is bout the mixed emotions of the speaker. He is joyous about the victorious return after a deadly war at the same time he is sad as his captain is no more. It symbolises the mornful feelings about the great leader. It is dedicated to Abraham Lincoln, the former President of America.
4) Rhyme Scheme : The Rhyme Scheme of 1, 3 and 5 stanza is 'aabb'. For the short-lined stanzas (2, 4 and 6), it is 'abcb'.
5) Figures of speech : Apostrophe, Repetition, Onomatopoeia etc.
6) Special Features : This poem is a fine example of elegy. The ships anchor is a symbol of the end of the war. The death of the captain represents the death of Abraham Lincoln. The voyage implies the Civil War. The implied meaning of the ship is anchord safe and sound, the war is over and from now on peace prevails.
7) Favourite Line : The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won.
8) Why I like/don't like the Poem : I like this poem because it is very hearttouching. I can visualize almost every imagery used in the poem. It is beautifully composed. I can imagine how Americans might have felt at the loss of their captain.
