The Taj Mahal is an integral part of India’s cultural heritage and it is universally admired by almost everyone around the world. The monument has earned a place among the seven wonders of the world.
When we visited the Taj Mahal, we were impressed to see its magnificent architecture. The exquisite mausoleum within the complex was built by the Mughal ruler, Shah Jahan in memory of one of his wives — Mumtaz Mahal. Moreover, the Taj Mahal is exemplary of the Mughal artistic and architectural accomplishments that saw its zenith, especially during Shah Jahan’s reign. Historically, Shah Jahan is famous for introducing elements that have come to be identified as chief aspects of Mughal architecture. The extensive use of marble instead of red sandstone is one such aspect.
We entered the Taj Mahal complex from the north gate. Before reaching the main mausoleum, we were stunned to see the level of symmetry accomplished in constructing the gates. Built chiefly out of red sandstone, the north gate is embellished by decorated panels and accents of white marble. Another astonishing moment was seeing the graves of both Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal.
