Given :

Object is dropped from a height of 10 m , so

  • Initial velocity of object, u = 0
  • Distance covered by object to reach the ground, s = 10 m
  • Acceleration due to gravity, a = g = 9.8 m/s²

To find :

  • Velocity of object when it touches the ground, v = ?

Formulae required :

  • Third equation of motion

      2 a s = v² - u²

[ where a is acceleration, s is distance covered, v is final velocity and u is initial velocity of object ]

Calculation :

Using third equation of motion

→ 2 a s = v² - u²

→ 2 ( 9.8 ) ( 10 ) = v² - ( 0 )²

→ 196 = v²

v = 14 m/s

Therefore,

  • Velocity of Object when it touches the ground will be 14 m/s .

Three equations of motion :

  • First equation of motion

      v = u + a t

  • Second equation of motion

     s = u t + 1/2 a t²

  • Third equation of motion

      2 a s = v² - u²

[ where a is acceleration, s is distance covered, v is final velocity, t is time taken and u is initial velocity of object ]
