During the 1890s, the Muslims and Hindus had grown apart. Hindus followed the Congress, while th Muslims were influenced by the Muslim League.  

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was the person who introduced the "Two Nation Theory". He was a great inspiration and guideline to the Muslims. He wanted to educate the Muslims and improve the relationship between the British and the Muslims.  

He started the Aligarh Movement and was responsible of establishing several Muslim educational institutes. He also founded the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental Defence Association in 1893.  

The purpose of founding the association was to unite the Muslims and reduce the influence of the Congress in India. Through this association, the Muslim leaders wished to improve Anglo-Muslim/Anglo-Oriental relationships as well.
