SUMMARY OF INDIAN RELATION IN PLYMOUTH PLANTATION

  • For months, Indians watched the English and stole some of their some tools but created no overtures till Samoset approached in March and spoke to them in broken English.
  • He told the English regarding the amount of natives within the area, who led them, and what the outlying region was like.
  • Shortly then, Samoset came back with a tiny cluster of natives who returned the stolen tools.
  • They distributed  gifts among each other  and learned that Massasoit, a sachem, and a chief would shortly arrive.
  • Massasoit arrived, together with Squanto, who had been to England and spoke English well.
  • The english people and the natives exchanged gifts and amused themselves and then the 2 communities drew up a six-part agreement that ensured the peace, safety, and communication of all involved.
  • The other Indians came back to their respective areas, however Squanto stayed behind with the English and helped them to fish, hunt, plant, and navigate the region.

Answer:

The excerpt from “Indian Relations” in the reading Of Plymouth Plantation describes the relationship between the Plymouth colonists and the American Indians. The Plymouth colonists were in need of help because half of their people were dead due to illness and the rest were struggling. To add to their problems, their relationship with nearby American Indian groups wasn't working. At this time, Samoset, an American Indian leader, helped the colonists get acquainted with the lifestyle of the American Indians and also introduced them to another American Indian called Squanto. Squanto and his people took the colonists to meet the Sachem, or leader, named Massasoit. After some friendly interaction, Massasoit and his people made a settlement with the Plymouth colonists to coexist peacefully.
