1. Gravity kicks in and the upward velocity slows rapidly in line with gravitational forces before eventually gravity wins, upward velocity slows to zero before reversing and the apple falls back down to earth,
2. The second thing that happens is that horizontal velocity starts to fall as the apple encounters friction caused by all of the air particles in front of it. You threw the apple, but you didn’t throw the air, so that is static and now the apple is having to force its way through all of the soup of gasses in the atmosphere. This also causes it to slow rapidly.
