Obligatory functions are compulsory in nature. The municipal corporation undertakes the following obligatory functions:
(a) Supply of pure drinking water and construction and maintenance of waterworks;
(b) Construction, maintenance, naming and numbering of public streets;
(c) Removal and disposal of filth and rubbish, construction, maintenance and cleaning of drains, and public toilets;
(d) Establishment and maintenance of hospitals, maternity and child welfare centres;
(e) Taking preventive measures for the checking of contagious and dangerous diseases;
(f) Registration of births and deaths;
(g) Setting up of primary schools and adult education centres, reading rooms, libraries, etc.
