Observation of ganga action plan

The Ganga Action plan was launched by Shri Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India on 14 Jan. 1986 with the main objective of pollution abatement, to improve the water quality and treatment of sewage, and to prevent entering of toxic and industrial wastes into the river.

The results of the Ganga Action Plan show that some improvements in water quality were observed everywhere when measured in terms of DO (dissolved oxygen) and BOD (biochemical oxygen demand), although the improvements were quite small in some places.
