The father of Green Revolution was the agrarian geneticist, Nazareno Stampelli, through his pioneering research in the 1920s and 1930s.
In India, the famous scientist, Norman Borlaug, was invited in 1961 by the then Minister of Agriculture, Mr C. Subramanium, as a famine was looming on the horizon. New seeds and crops were developed and we managed to minimise the effects of the drought. Indian scientists carried on the good work for some time, until Dr M.S. Swaminathan took charge of Indian Council of Agricultural Research and during his tenure and afterwards ensured we produced food in excess of our needs.
The story of our Green Revolution is incomplete until we mention the names of many leading scientists and agriculturists, but Dr Swaminathan has rightfully been called the father of the movement.
My observation of the Green Revolution is that it has ensured plentiful supply of food for mankind and in our country today we produce more than our requirement; so much so that our Parliament was able to enact the Food Security Act not too long ago.
