Observe fish in an aquarium. You will find flap like structures on both sides of their heads. These are flaps which cover the gills. These flaps open and close alternately. On the basis of these observations, explain the process of respiration in the fish.

Fishes use gills for respiration purposes. The gills remain covered by flaps. The fish opens the flaps to allow the water to reach the gills.

The water contains dissolved oxygen in it that the gills absorb during the respiration process.

During the respiration process, the water and blood flow directions are opposite across the gills.
