observe plants with thread-like stuctures (tendrils).

write the names of any two plants which have tendrils and also write how they are useful to the plants.

Tendrils are thread-like structures grown from the poor stems of the plant, the type of plant which has a specialized form of stem, leaf or petiole, a thread-like structure which needs a host for touch and support through which it twins around. The two most common examples of plants with tendrils are grape plant and sweet pea plant.

Grape plants are most common and we all have mostly seen around us which comes in the family of grapevines. It is called because it has vines, the structures or organ by which it grows that is tendril. It is a soft cylindrical structure which is coiled and helps that plant in support and twins along with a host.

Another one is sweet pea, we can see small tendrils that help the plant and get twisted. It is the lateral organ of the plant which has a twining tendency which causes it to encircle the object encountered with it. Tendrils are sensitive to contact as it brushes against an object it turns towards it. Strong mechanical tissue, sclerenchyma develops in the tendrils which provide enough support and weight to the plant.

It is to be noted and learnt that leaf tendrils are grown from poor stems in plants; their leaves are converted into the tendrils which helps the plant in other ways providing support and weight to the plant. The upper leaflets of the ‘Pea’ plant are converted into the tendrils. These are the modifications in the plants in accordance with the climate for their growth and development.
