Observe the following diagram and calculate the angle of deviation suffered by the ray LM which is incident on the prism with angle of prism 60 degree and angle of emergence 60 degree.

In the given figure it can be observed that :-

  • Angle of deviation = D = ?
  • Angle of prism = A = 60°
  • Angle of emergence =E = 60°
  • Angle of Incidence = I = 40°

Now we know that the sum of angle if incidence and angle of emergence of a prism is equals to sum of angle of deviation and angle of prism.

This is represented by :-

\angle \: i + \angle  e = \angle \: a + \angle \: d

After inputting the know values we get :-

40° + 60° = 60° + \angle \: d

100° = 60° + \angle \: d

\angle \: d = 100° - 60°

\angle \: d = 40°

Therefore we get the Ray LM deviates by an angle of 40° from its path.
