Observe the force and give reason.
* Take an empty glass tumbler and fill it completely with water.
* Cover the mouth of the glass tumbler with a stiff cardboard similar to a greeting card or
a postcard .
* Make sure that that no air bubble get s trapped between the cardboard and the
surface if the water.
* Invert the the glass tumbler down towards the cardboard.
* Gently remove the hand carboard.

When you will remove your hand, you will find the card stays in place and the water does not flow out. This is because air exerts pressure on the card from below to keep the card in place. Here, the pressure exerted by air upwards is more than the pressure exerted by water downwards.
