(b) It is a process of refining a metal by the process of electrolysis . In the electrolysis refining of copper , the electrolyte used is acidified copper sulphate .

At cathode :- Cu  ⇒  Cu^{2+}  + 2e^{-}

At anode :-  Cu^{2+}  + 2e^{-}  Cu

The soluble impurities go into the solution and insoluble settle down at the bottom of anode and are known as anode mud .

(c)   Uses

Many metals, such as copper, zinc,  tin, nickel, silver, gold, etc., are refined electrolytically.
