After a brief survey of the forests in Orissa, six potential sites highly rich in floristic composition and endemism have been identified. These are designated as the biodiversity granaries of Orissa. They are the Similipal Biosphere Reserve, Gandhamardan hill, Mahendragiri hill, Deomali hill, Bhitarkanika and Chilika lagoons. Out of the 2727 plant species reported from Orissa, 27 species have been found to be endemic and all most all of them have been found to be present in these granaries. The present paper deals and discusses the six bio-granaries along with their physiographical significance, diverse vegetation types and important floral elements. Ecological degradation and loss of biodiversity pose a serious threat to sustainable development. In recent times, indiscriminate human exploitation of natural resources and over population coupled with the continuous grazing of (under) productive cattle population pose the greatest threat to species and ecosystems. Many valuable species have reduced to an alarming number and at times disappeared from the scene. Natural hazards owing to their adverse impacts, also contribute to the loss of biodiversity. Thus, an urgent need has been felt to conserve the gene pool involving a mix of in situ as well as ex situ strategies
