Oersted discovered the experiment of magnetic of magnetic effect of current . In the experiment Oersted observed that flow of electric current through  a conductor produce a magnetic field around it .

Take a thick insulated copper wire and arrange it in such a way that the portion AB of the wire points in the north south direction . Connect the two ends of the wire to a battery through a switch and also placed a compass under the wire AB . When no current passes through the wire , the compass points in the usual north south direction . When a current is passed through the wire , the magnetic compass is deflected from its usual north south direction . A magnetic compass is a magnetic needle which can be deflected only in the presence of another magnetic field . From this experiment Oersted concludes that when a current is passed through a wire , a magnetic field is always produce around it .
