Answer:

Of all the arguments presented by the greeks as proof that the earth is spherical, the most convincing one reason is If the Earth was flat, then a ship traveling away from an observer should become smaller and smaller until it disappeared.

Explanation:

  • If the Earth was flat, then a ship traveling away from an observer should become smaller and smaller until it disappeared. However, the Greeks observed that the ship became smaller and then its hull disappeared first before the sail as if it was being enveloped by the water until it completely disappeared.
  • For a very long time, the idea of the shape of the earth was flat. It was believed that it is a flat surface and one will fall if one travelled too far. This was proven wrong by the Greeks. There were different premises that the Greeks relied upon to reach this conclusion.
  • The sailors noticed that they came across different clusters of stars when they travelled from north to south. This was not the case when they travelled from east to west. Hence, it was proposed that the surface of the earth was slightly curved along the north-south direction, if not east-west.
  • Another keen observation was made about the gradual appearance of mast of the ships sailing towards them. It would have been the whole made if the earth was a flat surface.
  • This was further collaborated by the curved silhouette of the earth casted on the moon during the lunar eclipse. This visual solidified the earlier two assumptions.

Answer:

There are multiple arguments by the Greeks to prove that the Earth is spherical. Out of these, some are much more believable than others.

Explanation:

Out of the many propositions, the fact that ships would appear smaller and smaller until they disappeared when traveling away from an observer is the most convincing one to the experts and commoners alike.

In reality, the ship did become smaller, but its hull disappeared before its sail, as though it was getting submerged in water. This happened because the surface of the Earth is indeed curved.

For the longest of times, the commoners believed that the Earth was flat, and one shouldn't travel too far, else, they'd fall off the edge.

The Greeks, being the more intellectual ones, proved this fear to be wrong.
