Embryo sac in flowering plants is a haploid multicellular structure which contain eight nuclei.

Diploid megaspore mother cell undergo meiosis and produce 4 haploid megaspores, out of which 3 degenerate and only one remain functional and become enlarged in each ovule. It is called embryo sac. The haploid nucleus of embryo sac undergo 3 mitotic division to produce eight nuclei.

Two haploid polar nuclei present in the centre fuse to form diploid secondary polar nucleus.

Three nuclei present at the chalazal end form antipodal cells.

Three nuclei present at the micropylar end are organised to form egg apparatus.
