Answer:

The answer is (b) Benzoyl derivative

Explanation:

The introduction of the benzoyl group ( C_{6}H_{5}CO ) into a compound is known as Benzoylation

  • In this reaction, the  Benzoyl chloride reacts with compounds having an active hydrogen atom such as alcohols, phenols, amines, etc. in the presence of sodium hydroxide ( NaOH ) or pyridine
  • The active hydrogen present in the compound is replaced by the benzoyl C_{6}H_{5}CO- group.
  • This reaction is also known as the Schotten-Baumann reaction

C_{6}H_{5}OH + C_{6}H_{5}COCl   →  C_{6} H_{5}.O.OC_{6}H_{5} + HCl

C_{2}H_{5}OH + C_{6}H_{5}COCl   →  C_{2}H_{5}O.OC.C_{6}H_{5} + HCl

C_{6}H_{5}NH_{2} + C_{6}H_{5}COCl  →  C_{6}H_{5} NH.CO.C_{6}H_{5} + HCl

C_{2}H_{5}NH_{2} + C_{6}H_{5}COCl  →   C_{2}H_{5} NH.CO.C_{6}H_{5} +HCl

These benzoyl derivatives are crystalline compounds and on hydrolysis give back the original active hydrogen compound.

Benzoylation is therefore used to protect these groups
