The atomic numbers of two elements are 8 and 16 respectively. Write the
clectronic configuration of these two elements. Do you keep these two
clements in the same group of the modem periodic table ? Justify your
answer. Find out which of these two elements is more electronegative. Give
reason for your answer.

Explanation:

The electronic configuration of nitrogen N(7)=2,5

Phosphorous P(15)=2,8,5

N is more electronegative than P.

From top to bottom down a group, electronegativity decreases. This is because number of shell increases down a group, and thus there is an increased distance between the valence electrons and nucleus, or a greater atomic radius.
