The third number is  1/6.

  • Two numbers given are 1/2 and 1/3.
  • We have to find the third number so that the resulting numbers average will be equal to 1.
  • Let the third number be x
  • Now we calculate the average of three numbers

1/2 + 1/3 + x =1

\frac{3+2}{6} + x = 1

x = 1-\frac{5}{6}

x = 1/6

To find the average you have to get the sum of all the values and divide it by the number of the values. In this case we need to have a sum of 3, because there are 3 fractions right now, and if you divide 3 by 1, you will get 1.

First I did 1/2+1/3 and I got 5/6, then I did 3-5/6 so that I will get the third number for our equation. The result was 2 1/6, the improper fraction was 13/6. Now, if you add 1/2, 1/3 and 13/6, you will get 3 as your answer, divide the 3 by 1 and the calculation is now proved to be correct.
