oh la la, Christmas in France is a classy occasion. But why is it called ‘Noel’?

If I am not wrong, it derives from the Latin word natalis that means birth. Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Christ and ergo it is natural for people to refer to it as "birth" or "nativity".
