AMOUNT HE WAS GIVEN FOR EACH PLATE IF NOT BROKEN = 3

AMOUNT DEDUCTED IF HE BROKE A PLATE = 9

AMOUNT HE RECEIVED = 240

∴ NO OF PLATES WASHED =  240 ÷ 3

                                              = 80

TOTAL NO OF PLATES = 100

∴NO OF PLATES BROKEN = 100-80 = 20(ans)
