a) Oil and fat containing food items are flushed with nitrogen while packing them in order to prevent rancidity. Nitrogen provides an inert atmosphere and helps prevent the reaction between the food items and oxygen.

b) We apply paint on iron articles to prevent rusting. By applying paint we prevent the contact between iron and the moist atmosphere and prevent rusting.

Dear Student,

◆ Oil and fat containing food items are flushed with nitrogen because -

  • Oils and fats when exposed to air, they gets oxidised and turn rancid.
  • To prevent this, food should be stored in inert environment.
  • As nitrogen doesn't readily react with food, it provides relatively inert atmosphere.
  • Hence, food items are flushed with nitrogen during packing.

Thanks dear. Hope this helps you...
